The sooner you apply, the sooner you get access to all the services. Remember that before you apply you must be registered on at least one course at Uppsala University.
When you have received your user identity you can go to the university student portal www.student.uu.se and log on to the different services, e.g. your personal page with study information, your file area and your e-mail through web mail.
Your department can offer additional services where you can use your identity to access for example particular web resources or the departments' computer labs.
If you already have an e-mail address you can have all your e-mail from the university forwarded to that address.
The majority of student flats and dormitories in Uppsala are connected to UpUnet-S. If you are living in such student housing you can log in using your identity and use the permanent connection.
E-mail and e-mail directory
With your user identity at UpUnet-S you get a personal e-mail account. You can check your e-mail using an e-mail client or a web browser. It is also possible to have your e-mail forwarded and to add an automated away message.
You can also choose to be included in an electronic directory of students at Uppsala University. You may be shown in the e-mail directory in three alternative ways:
- name, e-mail address, homepage address and registered courses are shown,
- name, e-mail address, homepage address, home address, phone number and registered courses are shown,
- nothing is shown.

Most student housing in Uppsala where students at Uppsala University live have computer network sockets with permanent connection to UpUnet-S. To use these sockets you need an Ethernet network interface card in your computer. If you have questions about whether your housing is connected to UpUnet-S you should contact your landlord for more information and the conditions for connection to the local network.

You can connect by modem with a speed of up to 56 kbps and by ISDN with the speed 64 kbps or 128 kbps. If you wish to connect by ISDN a special ISDN subscription is required from the telephone provider in addition to a specific card/adapter (sometimes wrongly called an ISDN modem).
